Darwaza: a portal into the depths of hell

Our planet, despite the fact that research is carried out all year round, all is still, in many respects, totally unknown territory. Year by year, humanity manages to find hitherto unexplored places, many of which did not fit into the existing picture of the world. One of such places, whose name probably known to all lovers of conspiracy and superstitious people, located on the territory of modern Turkmenistan.

Locals call this failure the portal into the depths of hell – and argue with them is quite difficult, because Darwaza is a huge hole in the ground, bursting flame for the fifth decade. During this time, the local portal to hell has acquired dozens of legends, but sources tell him the real story remains very little. We will try to tell you that in fact represents Darwaza, the gates of hell, that can not be put out to anyone.

The crater is 230-feet wide and situated near Derweze village in Turkmenistan. It was named the Door to Hell by locals, referring to the endless flames and boiling mud that can be found inside. Originally a level surface, the site was identified by Soviet scientists in 1971 as an area that was believed to house a substantial oil field. A camp and drilling rig were set up nearby, and, after the Soviets were pleased with amount of gas resources that were believed to be at the site, it was agreed that gas from the field would start being stored. How to open the door of hell

The story began back in 1971. Geologists of the Soviet Union, who conducted surveys of underground gas on the territory of modern Turkmenistan discovered huge deposits far from the village Darwaza. Of course, almost immediately began work on drilling, field reconnaissance was carried out very superficially. Since then, and began the story of the burning to this day the failure that many superstitious people just called a portal to hell.

Darvaza gas crater was created in the 1950s when a Soviet gas drilling rig fell into an underground cavern. The crater was set on fire shortly afterwards and has been burning ever since.

Catastrophe

Installing the rig did not take long. Work on gas production was in full swing, but, one day, the engineers ran into an underground cavern. Voids were so huge that the top layer penetration caused a large-scale collapse – here collapsed tower itself with all the equipment, and standing close to transport. Luckily, none of the workers was injured.

disappointment

A huge hole formed in the ground, instantly filled with exiting gas. Scored biologists concern, because it was fatal for humans and livestock – agricultural area where drilling was carried out, was the home for several large farms. Geologists have decided to collect the gas to ignite, suggesting that only a few days is enough to burn it. The operation was conducted in March 1971 the fifth. The outbreak of the gas coming from the cavity around the clock, not extinguished after a few days. Burning crater in the middle of the steppe scares people for the fifth decade.

Solution

The funnel has repeatedly tried to fall asleep. Nothing good comes out of it: the expedition, conducted in 1983, was not able to do even a third of the necessary work, and in March 1992 there was another disaster: a group of local environmental activists from five people died in the full strength, under mysterious circumstances. This, of course, only added confidence superstitious people in the origin of the internal portal. In fact, some gas can burn for forty years in a row and do not fade!

Current state

Back in 2004, the Government of Turkmenistan Darvaza village demolished to the ground. Actually, the people here and so no choice: even the most stubborn prefer to move to a quieter place. In 2010, the President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov ordered willful decision to fill the crater, because of there every second burn precious countless cubic meters of natural gas. But, to paraphrase a famous saying, Gurbanguly suggests a reality features: Darwaza lights still on and off is not going to.

Expedition Koronis

In November 2013, to explore one of the most unusual places on the planet decided famous explorer George Koronis. He organized an expedition funded by National Geographic. The goal was no less, to go down to the bottom of the hot, burning crater and take soil samples. Preparing for the trip took at Koronis whole year and a half, and the gear made of Kevlar in munitions factories. Then, a brave traveler, despite the protests of numerous relatives, went to his private tour of the Turkmen hell.

Life in Hell

Koronis incredibly lucky – twice. First, the equipment did not fail and it just survived. And, secondly, the researcher not only managed to take soil samples and found at the bottom of the crater of life.Bacteria, which was surprised scientists have studied on the surface, do not live anywhere on earth, except for this strange and terrible, seething lava dip in the ground. This finding is very inspired and astrobiologists, because now those planets where life is considered impossible, it can be inhabited.
